New England Sand Sculpting Festival at Revere Beach 2009

Revere Beach, the crescent shaped sandy playground north of Boston, is hosting the annual New England Sand Sculpting Festival on July 15th through July 19th. World champion sand sculptors from all over the U.S. will gather at Revere Beach, the nation's oldest public beach, to make art out of sand and entertain thousands of sunbathers and spectators alike.

The art of sand sculpting

Sand sculpting is not child's play, as you will see on the event website which displays photos of the sculptures. They are big, bold, beautiful and intricately carved. The sculptures are made out of water and sand only, though the sand is actually a special brand from New Hampshire and not the stuff you usually see on the beach.

There is a set of rules for the contestants, which include specifications for the dimensions of the sculptures ( 18 feet by 18 feet); hours that the sculptors are allowed to work and so forth. Each sculptor is given 10 tons of sand to create his or her masterpiece and must also participate in judging fellow sculptors' work.

The Revere Beach Partnership

The New England Sand Sculpting Festival draws 250.000 spectators to Revere Beach annually, according to information on the organization's website. The festival is a project of the Revere Beach Partnership, established in 2001 to "help preserve the historic character of Revere Beach."

"The Revere Beach Partnership is dedicated to hosting events such as this to bring the beach back to its place as one of the premier beaches on the New England coast line," said Revere Mayor Thomas Ambrosino.

Location: Revere Beach is located in Revere, MA (about 10 miles North of downtown Boston) and is accessible via the Blue Line on the "T".

Cost: The event is free of charge but donations are welcome

Basile & Family's Thanksgiving Dinner

All families are welcome to the 2nd Annual Basile Family Thanksgiving Dinner, with all the trimmings, sponsored by State Representative Carlo Basile & Family.

The dinner takes place on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27th.

Veteran's Day Events

Boston, Massachusetts: Tuesday, November 11th. The Boston Veterans Day Parade begins at 1 p.m. at the Boston Common. Parade will head down Charles Street to Boylston Street, Tremont Street, to Cambridge and then to City Hall plaza. For more information please call (617) 635-4455.

Rockland, Massachusetts: Tuesday, November 11th. The 55th annual Tri Town Veteran's Day parade will begin at is expected to begin around 9 a.m. The Rockland Veteran parade will begin on VFW Drive, near the corner of VFW and Liberty Street. The procession will make its way along Union Street to the parking lot in Rockland Plaza about a mile and a half away. Plymouth, Massachusetts: Tuesday, November 11th. The Plymouth Veterans Day parade assembles at 9 a.m. at Hedge Road in North Plymouth and steps off at 9:30 a.m. For more information call the Veterans Services Department at 508-747-1620, ext. 172 or 173.

Amesbury's annual Veterans Day Parade will take place at 10 a.m. The parade route begins at the Amesbury Fire Station, will proceed to Huntington Square, down Main Street and concludes at the Dough Boy statue on the grounds of Amesbury's Middle School.

Lexington Veteran's Day Parade & Ceremonies: Tuesday, November 11, 2008 The Lexington Veteran's Day Parade starts at 10:00 a.m. at the White House located at 1557 Massachusetts Avenue and then stops at the Korean/Vietnam War Memorial. The parade continues down Massachusetts Avenue to Meriam Street and then to the VFW Memorial.

City of Lynn Ceremony - City of Lynn Veterans Day Ceremony, When Tuesday, November 11, 2008, 11am, Where Lynn City Hall Foyer, Lynn, MA, Note Lynn Department of Veterans' Services(781) 598-4000. The Lynn Public School Band and well-known Tenor, Brian Landry will perform. All are welcome to attend as we honor all veterans. Light Refreshments Will Be Served.
