Ruggiero, who was honored for his service to the nation, received a Bronze Star "V" for Valor and a Purple Heart after he, Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathaniel Bruckenthal and five U.S. Navy sailors were attacked on April 24, 2004, while patrolling a security zone near the oil terminal of Bazarat in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
