Merry Christmas! Love Goofy, Mickey, Minnie & Donald

Christmas Superstitions

It is said :

- The child born on Christmas Day will have a special fortune.

- Snow on Christmas means Easter will be green.

- You will have as many happy months in the coming year, as the number of houses you eat mince pies in during Christmastime.

- In Greece, some people burn their old shoes during the Christmas season to prevent misfortunes in the coming year.

- To have good health throughout the next year, eat an apple on Christmas Eve.

- The gates of Heaven open at midnight on Christmas Eve. Those who die then go straight to Heaven (an Irish belief).

- Christmas candles should be left burning until Christmas morning and should rest undisturbed from time of lighting until they are snuffed.

- Singing Christmas carols at any time other than during the festive season is unlucky.

- The yule log should be lit by a piece of the log used on the previous Christmas. Once that is done, no evil spirit can then enter into the house. The remains of the Yule log were also considered lucky, and would be a protection against lightning or fire.

Never a Christmas morning;
never the old year ends,
But someone thinks of someone;

Garish good fun

Once relegated to grandma's closet, gaudy holiday sweaters have gotten sort of hip. Just check eBay.

DORCHESTER - The holiday party had all the trappings of a spirited yuletide celebration - a high-definition fire burning brightly on the plasma television in the corner, a big tray of green and red Jell-O shots passed around the room by a smiling host. But there was something slightly amiss about the wardrobe that this group of 20-somethings had chosen for their fete. It looked as if partygoers raided their moms' closets for holiday sweaters. The truth is, many of them did.

It's the Christmas season's hottest trend: the tacky holiday sweater party.

"People are more friendly when they get together at an ugly holiday sweater party," says Adam Peck, who was hosting a Saturday night soiree with his roommate Jared Pitts. "It's easier to talk to people because everyone is a little goofier in their ugly sweater."

Santa gets parking ticket while delivering toys

NEW YORK—Santa Claus has added a New York City traffic agent to his naughty list after she gave him a ticket while delivering gifts to children.

Chip Cafiero says he'll fight the $115 ticket he received in Brooklyn on Black Friday when he was dressed as Santa.

The 60-year-old retired schoolteacher was riding a horse-drawn carriage and handing out toys and candy canes. An SUV carrying the toys and protecting the horse from traffic was double parked next to him.

Santa says he yelled "Ho! Ho! Ho!" to get the traffic agent's attention because the SUV wasn't blocking traffic. But in his words, "This grinch just went ahead and fined me."

Local politician Martin Golden calls the parking ticket "ridiculous."

Police won't comment on it.

No, it's not Santa: Burglar gets stuck in chimney

ST. LOUIS—Santa aside, that trip down the chimney doesn't work so well after all. Police arrested a burglar early Wednesday who spent a harrowing three hours stuck inside the chimney of a pawn shop.

Authorities were called to the location at 3 a.m., and found the man wedged in the chimney, unable to move. After about three hours, rescuers were able to knock away bricks and free him.

He was taken to a hospital for evaluation. The man's name has not been released.

Herald readers play Santa

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT: Amanda Conway and her son, Jack, 11, brought gifts to Jose Lacen yesterday to replace the ones that were stolen from his apartment Friday.

Big-hearted Herald readers are showing Jose Lacen it’s a wonderful life, but the handicapped man whose Roslindale apartment was ransacked by a depraved thief says all he really wants for Christmas is a friend.

“Someone to spend time with me - that would be a great gift. That’s all I want,” Lacen, 39, said yesterday after scores of deputized Santa Clauses from as far away as Tennessee and Wisconsin offered to replace the TV, DVD player, cash and presents for his two daughters stolen from him Friday while he was at a doctor’s appointment.

Lacen, a former jet fueler at Logan International Airport, has been dependent on a wheelchair since a life-threatening illness forced him into a month-long coma in 2000. He said conversation helps him with his speech therapy. Either by inconvenience or pang of conscience, whoever ripped him off mercifully left behind his computer.

“My company is my TV and computer,” said Lacen, a Patriots [team stats] and pro wrestling fan whose 10- and 18-year-old daughters live in Florida and North Carolina.

Some readers down on their own luck still wanted to send Lacen a Christmas card.

Amanda Conway of East Boston was especially touched by Lacen’s story. Her brother has Down syndrome.

“To me, anybody that’s disabled is more vulnerable,” Conway said. “It just hit me hard. It just made me angry. I’m far from rich, but I’d rather do something for somebody, and I hope I’m not the only person.”

She wasn’t. Not by a long shot.

Patrick Lombard, owner of West Cork Auto in Jamaica Plain, said, “I’ve been fortunate. I have a good business, nice kids. My life is good and I see this guy has nothing.

“You can’t help everybody,” Lombard said, “but this guy, I just felt I had to. He has two kids; I have three kids. Plus, he’s a Pats fan like I am. He’s got to have his TV back for Sunday.”

Stephanie McGowan of Foxboro, who is raising a child with autism, took one look at Lacen’s forlorn face on the front page of yesterday’s Herald and knew reaching out “was the right thing to do.”

“Something about him just compelled me to want to do something,” she said.

Timothy Sullivan of De Pere, Wisc., owner of Hidden Gems Cottages, grew up in Massachusetts.

“It just kind of broke my heart a little bit,” Sullivan said of Lacen’s plight. “Whether you’re somebody who needs the money or not, you just don’t steal from somebody like that. The poor guy’s in a wheelchair. There’s no excuse.”

Despite all he’s overcome, Lacen said, “I will always believe in people.

“You always find bad in life, but not everybody is the same. That I know for sure.”
