A Barbie World

No wonder Barbie looks so great at 50—the ultimate blonde bombshell has 25 hair and makeup pros on call.

Like Linda Blair, Marie Osmond, Mackenzie Phillips, and Irene Cara, Barbie turns 50 this year.

We don't know how the rest of them are coping with the Big Five-O, but at the halfcentury mark, Barbie is still one of the most powerful beauty icons in the world. That's no small feat considering that Barbie has had more than 50,000 makeovers since she was born in 1959. The original Barbie set the mold for all the looks to come, with her exaggerated black eyeliner and sexy red lips. (Her famous blonde hair, it turns out, was dictated by all the kids and mothers who didn't buy the brunette model.) She's since had a Jackie Kennedy bouffant (Bubble Cut Barbie, 1962), taken her glamour cues from Farrah Fawcett (Superstar Barbie, 1977), and gone goth (the new Hard Rock Barbie). Even when she's straddling a Harley or tricked out as an astronaut, "Barbie always has what the high heel has -- a kind of hyperfemininity," says Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of the museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

Finding and executing Barbie-worthy beauty trends is an actual job -- many, many jobs, in fact. Mattel employs some 25 "hair-and-face designers" (including two licensed cosmetologists), plus teams of marketing mavens and other idea people who visit the Paris runways, trek to the streets of Tokyo and Hong Kong to check out what teenagers are wearing, and stay au courant with everything from "magazines like Allure to fashion-industry trade shows like Première Vision," says Evelyn Viohl, senior vice president of product design. Celebrities are examined ("We're especially inspired by ones who constantly change their look, like Gwen Stefani"), and hairstyles are auditioned for the designers' friends and kids. "We talk about her as if she were a real person," says Viohl. "We find ourselves getting into deep conversations about stuff like what colors she would never wear in a million years." Fifteen artists wield teeny, tiny sable brushes for up to three hours to put makeup on each new Barbie prototype -- foundation (regular Barbies wear one of seven tones, with "L.A. Tan" being the most popular), blush, lip gloss or lipstick, eyeliner, eyebrow pencil, and shadow. As with most life-size women, Barbie's preferred eye-shadow color is brown, with more than 300 shades of chocolate, taupe, espresso, and café au lait in her makeup arsenal.

For all her trendiness, Barbie is still a toy for little girls -- which is why you'll never see a Heroin Chic Barbie or a Pole Dancin' Barbie, however much those influences may have permeated fashion in the real world. That's also why Barbie sometimes adopts styles that better reflect the sensibilities of the fourth grade than those of Fifth Avenue -- especially where hair is concerned. Little girls definitely like it long: The bestseller of all time, Totally Hair Barbie in 1992, had 10 1/2 inches of hair down her 11 1/2-inch frame. And though there are now redheads and dark-haired dolls of all ethnicities, blondes still rule in sales. (There have even been blonde African-American Barbies, à la Beyoncé.) The original single-process shade has been updated with seven gradations of blonde tones that are now woven together to create an array of highlights and lowlights. Each hairstyle takes hours to construct and involves a top-secret gel and 10 to 20 minutes inside a low-temperature dryer. And this year, Barbie's even getting her own special detangler (which, alas, doesn't work on humans). "Her hair gets knotted when kids play with her," Viohl says. "After 50 years of making dolls, we finally cracked that nut."

So how has Barbie prepared for her big birthday year? Well, she's inked a deal to launch a makeup and skin-care line for fans young and old, teamed up with 50 big-name designers for a fashion show -- and, judging by the height of her new eyebrows, we're guessing she's also gotten Botox.

This is funny!

Or maybe it's one of those "you had to be there" type things.

Was scanning the Globe and came across this event for this evening:

Sex & Drugs Trivia
Today, Sunday, Jan 4 8:00p
at The Savant Project, Boston, MA
An adult trivia game. Beer specials, outrageous prizes, and hilarious hands-on rounds. Starts at 8 p.m. every Sunday night.

Phone: (617) 566-5958
Age Suitability: 21 and up
Tags: bar, game, sunday, globe city weekly
An adult trivia game.

Beer specials, outrageous prizes, and hilarious hands-on rounds. Starts at 8 p.m. every Sunday night.

This reminds me of when Martha, Daryle, JW and I used to go to a bar @ Orient Heights after work...for the life of me I can't think of the name of it...and instead of video games, they had a sex trivia game. Sadly, we all had our areas of expertise and it would be pretty funny. Or at least we thought so. It was the bar that we used to take money out of the wishing well to pay for the toll because we'd always come out of there broke. I think the place burned down and they never rebuilt. Was there "Blazing" in the name? This is going to drive me nuts!

Globe Article "20 Best Places to Kiss in Boston"

I was reading the Boston Globe and saw an article titled "20 Best Places to Kiss in Boston". Some were a little obvious, like welcoming someone home @ Logan airport. One was very romantic when I was in high school, which is probably the only time I've been to the Planetarium at the Museum of Science. Others were near, by or inside a hotel...what kind of a kiss were they suggesting there? The majority of them were inappropriate places, unless you were at a restaurant being proposed to or telling your spouse you got a promotion, were having a baby, etc. Where is the romance at the Franklin Park Zoo?

I would much rather be on a beach watching the sun rise or set, or under a full moon on a starry night. I guess I just don't see the romantic side of Boston any more, maybe my age is showing! I don't know, I thought anywhere you were with the one you loved and kissed was enough, who actually notices the where?

Boston First Nighters will revel at these events

Hub residents feeling the economic squeeze can rest assured that celebrating the New Year in Beantown won’t break the bank.

“We do recognize that this is a tough economic time for families, but First Night has always been a good value and that remains so,” said Joyce Linehan, spokeswoman for First Night. “All outdoor events are free. Buttons are only $18 for indoor activities and children under 4 are free.”

JetBlue makes pitch to Sox fans

JetBlue Airways Corp. is teaming up with the Red Sox. The airline's first pitch is a nine-hour sale that starts at 9 a.m. today, with one-way fares as low as $9 in honor of the team's legendary No. 9 hitter, Ted Williams.

The airline, known for providing every passenger with a leather seat and a personal television screen, is becoming the team's official marketing partner through 2011, winning the rights to advertise at Fenway Park, paste its logo on the Sox's website, and plaster the team's red-stocking logo on JetBlue's marketing materials.

To create buzz, JetBlue is launching the fare sale on routes between Boston and all of the other cities it serves that are near American League ballparks - for travel between Jan. 6 and Feb. 10, with some restrictions.

Garish good fun

Once relegated to grandma's closet, gaudy holiday sweaters have gotten sort of hip. Just check eBay.

DORCHESTER - The holiday party had all the trappings of a spirited yuletide celebration - a high-definition fire burning brightly on the plasma television in the corner, a big tray of green and red Jell-O shots passed around the room by a smiling host. But there was something slightly amiss about the wardrobe that this group of 20-somethings had chosen for their fete. It looked as if partygoers raided their moms' closets for holiday sweaters. The truth is, many of them did.

It's the Christmas season's hottest trend: the tacky holiday sweater party.

"People are more friendly when they get together at an ugly holiday sweater party," says Adam Peck, who was hosting a Saturday night soiree with his roommate Jared Pitts. "It's easier to talk to people because everyone is a little goofier in their ugly sweater."

Last Night's Performance

Last night we went to a very entertaining performance of "Knock 'em Dead" presented by the Feeney Players at St. Joe's College in Standish, Maine.

"Knock 'em Dead" is a 'you solve-it' comedy murder mystery. It features 5 contestants competing for the Vinnie Bumpcuss Stars of Tomorrow Talent Search competition. After a series of unfortunate events, the owner is found murdered and the 5 contestants and the emcee are the obvious suspects. With the help of the audience, we discover who Vinnie's murderer is and the motive behind it.

Cast of characters include: Louis Girlando as Hal Brown, an undercover police officer who pretends to be a ventriliquist to investigate a rumor of a crime about to happen at the club; Our very own, Lynda Consolo as comedian Roxie Brown, the smart talking quick witted comedian who has no problem knocking her audiences dead and a past she wishes she could leave behind him; Heidi Cross as an energetic, flag waving, baton twirling Bamby (with a 'Y') Lynn; Very funny Kris Hanks as one half of an Over the Rainbow dog act who performs with Fifi, his love, his pet; Chiara Ferrante as Lotta Verboten the Jazz singer from "The Convent" in Toledo with a really bad smoking habit; Allen Vaughan as Lou Dumbello the emcee who thinks he's in charge of the show, but doesn't have a clue what's going on backstage; Allison Persol as The Great Somnambulo, the hypnotist with a past and has a flair for putting her audience to sleep; Rachael Tordoff as Wendell, Hall Brown's puppet and partner on the force who sees more than she cares to when left alone backstage. Last, but not least, Caelin Moore as Vinnie...theater owner and dead guy. Caelin's performance was outstanding from the minute the office door was opened to the time spent flat on the floor with a knife in her back.

The Crew included: Christina Alger; Aimee Oulette, Kim DiGiovine, Diana Hildreth, Evan Angers, Katelyn Brown, Cassandra Peltzman, Elise Chabot, Sean Caldwell, Kelby Kim, Colleen Hennessey, and Elise Chabot.

Many funny moments and a lot of audience participation. A really MUST SEE production.

Leaving on a jet plane? Texas airport has karaoke

HOUSTON -- Leaving on a jet plane? Is the waiting the hardest part? Try airport karaoke!

Houston's Bush International Airport is setting up karaoke booths for travelers, just in time for the holidays. One was to be up and running on Thursday afternoon, airport officials said.

For the past two years, officials have invited choirs and bands from high schools and churches to perform at Bush and Hobby airports during December. Karaoke seemed the next logical step, said Caroline Schneider, assistant airport manager for customer service.

"During the holidays, we have a lot of our novice travelers," she said. "We thought while they are waiting, they can just sing a song."

Aspiring vocalists can choose from hundreds of song titles, Schneider said. Small prizes will be given to the singers.
