Revere library chief resigns amid inquiry

Revere’s longtime public library director resigned yesterday upon learning police are investigating him for allegedly making “inappropriate purchases” with city funds, Mayor Thomas G. Ambrosino confirmed last night.

Robert Rice Jr., 43, who could not be reached for comment, “has not been arrested and there’s been no charges brought against him,” Ambrosino stressed.

“There’s an ongoing investigation regarding his activities using city funds to make inappropriate purchases not library related.”

A source close to the police investigation said the purchases include “thousands” spent on, among other things, a watch and home furnishings.

Ambrosino said the bookworm’s suspect shopping was discovered during a routine audit of library spending that red-flagged “some suspicious purchases.”

He declined to say what those purchases were, but said “there’s no evidence” any were related to pornography.

Officials are still tallying the potential financial damage.

  1. Why does the article specify only one thing that is definitely not involved, namely, pornography?

  2. I thought that was an odd statement myself. Perhaps the person who asked the mayor for a statement specifically asked, but left that portion of the conversation out. Don't know.
