Snow estimates upgraded as storm approaches

Estimates for the Boston Area are 8-12 inches as of noon today.

As plows, salt spreaders, and other preparations kicked into high gear, forecasters slightly upgraded snowfall estimates for the storm bearing down on Massachusetts this afternoon.

Wind howling off the sea is expected to increase snow in some coastal areas, especially in Bristol and Plymouth counties, where accumulations may top 14 inches, according to the National Weather Service. The entire state is expected to be blanketed with 9 to 12 inches of snow, with slightly lower totals on Cape Cod. Boston is bracing for 10.6 inches, a slight increase from the previous estimate of 9.1 inches.

"Don't be fooled by the fact that it is not snowing now," said Alan Dunham, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Taunton. "The snow is coming, and it's going to come heavy."

The first flakes are expected to begin falling in Boston at noontime, with heavy squalls coming between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
