Police fear gun thefts prelude to more crime

The Southern Maine Violent Crimes Task Force and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office are investigating a rash of house burglaries in which dozens of guns were stolen.

The theft of guns is particularly worrisome, says Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion, because black-market firearms invariably end up contributing to more violent crimes.

"Somebody today is sitting on a hoard of guns, and that creates a real bad situation for everybody," Dion said. "If we don't do something to recover those guns, something will happen and it will be a tragedy."

The sheriff's office is investigating 19 residential burglaries that have occurred primarily in North Yarmouth, Naples, Sebago and Harpswell. It is unclear whether some of those burglaries are connected.

Man dies of equine encephalitis Naples area thought to be probable

An elderly Massachusetts man has died from a rare mosquito-borne illness he may have contracted recently while vacationing near Sebago Lake. While the deadly viral disease, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, has never been found in humans in Maine, public health officials warn it may become more common as temperatures rise in response to global climate change.

For people who live or vacation in Maine, said State Epidemiologist Dr. Kathleen Gensheimer, "The mosquito is like the state bird, just part of our everyday existence." But with the emergence of serious diseases such as EEE and West Nile virus, she said Thursday, Mainers should get serious about avoiding contact with the ubiquitous insects. The Sanderson Sisters sing "I Put a Spell on You"

Movie Trivia
• When Bette Midler takes the stage at the town Halloween Party, she says "Hello Salem, my name is Winifred. What's yours?". This is a take-off of the famous line, "Hello world, my name is Rose, what's yours?" that is spoken by Mama Rose in the musical "Gypsy". Midler played Mama Rose in the television version, Gypsy (1993) (TV), the same year this film was released.

• The role of Max Dennison was originally offered to Leonardo DiCaprio, but was given to Omri Katz when DiCaprio turned it down to appear in What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993).

• There were seven statues made of Bette Midler for the scene in which she bursts in the sunlight toward the end of the movie. One of the statues, along with Winnie's spell book, is housed at the Planet Hollywood restaurant in Orlando, Florida.

• Rosie O'Donnell was originally offered the role of Mary Sanderson, but it was ultimately given to Kathy Najimy. O'Donnell claims on her blog that she turned down the offer to work with the Divine Miss M because she didn't want to be a "scary witch".

• During the final fight in the cemetery, the background music imitates Miss Gulch's (the Wicked Witch) theme from The Wizard of Oz (1939).

• Brother and sister Garry Marshall and Penny Marshall play husband and wife. He's the one dressed as Satan.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As the Month of October ends, let's keep in mind that there are many women dealing with Breast Cancer and their struggle to survive will continue long past October.

Focusing on the negative does nothing for a healing body, mind, or heart.
Celebrate instead the things cancer cannot do -- and the things it can never take away.

What Cancer Cannot Do

It cannot cripple love.
It cannot shatter hope.
It cannot corrode faith.
It cannot destroy peace.
It cannot kill friendship.
It cannot suppress memories.
It cannot silence courage.
It cannot invade the soul.
It cannot steal eternal life.
It cannot conquer the spirit.

1926 – Magician Harry Houdini dies of gangrene and peritonitis that developed after his appendix ruptured.

Harry Houdini died of peritonitis secondary to a ruptured appendix. It has been speculated that Houdini was killed by a McGill University student, J. Gordon Whitehead, in Montreal. Houdini died of a ruptured appendix, caused by Whitehead delivering multiple blows to Houdini's abdomen.

Eyewitnesses were students named Jacques Price and Sam Smilovitz (sometimes called Jack Price and Sam Smiley). Their account of what happened generally agreed. The following is according to Price's description of the events. Houdini was reclining on his couch after his performance, having an art student sketch him. When Whitehead came in and asked if it was true that Houdini could take any blow to the stomach, Houdini replied in the affirmative. In this instance, he was hit three times, before Houdini protested. Whitehead reportedly continued hitting Houdini several times afterwards, and Houdini acted as though he were in some pain. Price recounted that Houdini stated that if he had had time to prepare himself properly, he would have been in a better position to take the blows. Although in serious pain, Houdini nonetheless continued to travel without seeking medical attention. Harry had apparently been suffering from appendicitis for several days and refusing medical treatment. His appendix would likely have burst on its own without the trauma.

When Houdini arrived at the Garrick Theater in Detroit, Michigan, on October 24, 1926, for what would be his last performance, he had a fever of 104 degrees F (40°C). Despite a diagnosis of acute appendicitis, Houdini took the stage. He was reported to have passed out during the show, but was revived and continued. Afterwards, he was hospitalized at Detroit's Grace Hospital.[29] Houdini died of peritonitis from a ruptured appendix at 1:26 p.m. in Room 401 on October 31 (Halloween), 1926, at the age of 52.

Donating Old Clothes to Charity

submitted by Tommy & Orize

Remember that cleaning out your closets at least once a year and giving former treasures to organizations such as, the Salvation Army, Goodwill , Big Brother Big Sister, or the charity of your choice, is a great way to give back to your community and help those who are less fortunate.

So look through your closets and see if you don't have something that doesn't fit, or might be a little out of fashion. Those things will probably fit someone else and could be the height of fashion for them.

It should make you feel all warm inside knowing that the clothes you previously wore are now gracing another grateful body! With that in mind, I send along this heartwarming photo to inspire you,and remind you that your efforts won't go unnoticed.

Michael Jackson's Thriller (Long Version)

Thriller, the 14-minute video, is regarded by many as the greatest music video of all-time, and the song itself is considered to be one of Jackson's signature songs.

Thriller (the album) was released on November 30, 1982, and simultaneously reached number one in the US and the UK; becoming the first album to do so. The album won a record-breaking seven Grammy Awards in 1984, including Album of the Year. That same year, Jackson won eight American Music Awards, the Special Award of Merit and three MTV Video Music Awards. Thriller was recognized as the world's best-selling album on February 7, 1984, when it was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records.

National Grid seeks OK to build four solar panel plants in Mass.

National Grid has submitted plans to state regulators to build four solar panel plants in Massachusetts at company-owned sites, including the iconic gas tank off the Southeast Expressway in Dorchester.

The company picked sites with ample space and at strategic locations on the region’s grid to alleviate electricity congestion points. The plans call for a 1-megawatt solar installation in Dorchester, a 1.5-megawatt solar installation in Revere, a 1.5-megawatt plant in Everett and a 1-megawatt installation in Haverhill. The projects will cost about $38 million, and the panels could cost National Grid customers about 8 cents per month.

The state Legislature earlier this year passed a law that allows utilities to develop and own up to 50 megawatts of solar generating capacity by 2010.

OctoberPhest! Phils win World Series

PHILADELPHIA -- They warmed by sheer numbers, ignoring the clouds that formed with each frozen scream. They added to the chilly night by waving white towels.

The City of Brotherly Love waited two days longer than expected, but after a wait that had entered its 28th year, what's another few days? After a delay announced at "an even 46 hours," the electrified crowd began simmering with celebratory dreams.

The Phillies delivered a 4-3 Game 5 win over the Rays on a 44-degree Wednesday night, completing a five-game triumph to award the franchise its second World Series championship in its 125-year history. (Full Story)

Philadelphia Wins World Series --- in Las Vegas Casinos at Least

Oct. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The Philadelphia Phillies have already won the World Series - at least in Las Vegas.

Bets placed on the Phillies to beat the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 were paid out even though the game was suspended because of rain two nights ago with the score tied at 2-2. The game was postponed until tonight.

According to Nevada Gaming Commission rules, if a Major League Baseball game is rained out, sports books use the score from the last completed inning, John Harper, senior oddsmaker at Las Vegas Sports Consultants, said in an interview. The Rays tied the game in the top of the sixth and umpires stopped play before the Phillies had their turn to bat. Most Las Vegas sports books are erasing that run and using the 2-1 score at the end of the fifth inning to determine that Philadelphia won. (Full Story)

Three Married Guys

Three married men were sitting together bragging about how they had given their new wives duties.

The first man had married a woman from Portland, Maine, and bragged he had told his wife she was going to do all the dishes and house cleaning. He said it took a couple days but on the third day he came home to a clean house and the dishes were done.

The second man had married a woman from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He bragged he had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. On the first day he didn't see any results, but the next day it was better. By the third day, his house was clean, the dishes were done and he had a huge dinner on the table.

The third man married a girl from Revere, Mass. He told her that her duties were to keep the house clean, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day most of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye ... enough to fix himself a bite to eat, load the dishwasher and call a landscaper.

50 Scariest Movies

Boston.com is running a list of the 50 scariest movies.

I love a good horror movie, not the slasher kind, altho every time I see Nightmare on Elm Street on TV, I have to admit Freddie creeps me out, and I just can't turn it off. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was one movie I could never watch. I've seen bits and pieces, and I know it's based on a true story, but I just didn't like what I saw. The first Saw was okay after years of not seeing a good horror movie. I prefer a psychological thriller. Like Silence of the Lambs (1991), with Anthony Hopkins & Jodie Foster, and Seven (1995), with Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow.

It's hard to believe that Psycho (1960), with Anthony Perkins & Janet Leigh, didn't make the list at all. I can't tell you how many times I've seen that movie and then showered with one eye open for about a week.

The scariest background music has to go to the Exorcist and Jaws which came in at 14 and 15 on the list. Too bad my dates to those movies didn't realize I was enjoying them, or maybe they did and that's why I didn't see much of them after. Psycho's violin strings being poked at didn't sound like music to me, but some people consider it a musical score...and it should never be played in the vicinity of a bathroom or while someone is showering.

Here's the Top 10 of the list. I've only seen 4 of them but I'm sure they'll all be on some channel this week:

1) The Thing (1982)
2) Ju on (2000)
3) Rec (2007)
4) The Ring (2002)
5) Alien (1979)
6) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
7) Dawn of the Dead (1978)
8) Evil Dead II (1987)
9) Halloween (1978)
10) Audition (1999)

Press Release - Office of the Attorney General of Massachusetts

Attorney General Martha Coakley’s Office has reached an agreement with the owner of a Revere construction company to settle allegations that he violated the Massachusetts prevailing wage, overtime, and records keeping laws. Richard Bennett, age 39, of Revere, owner of R.B. Metalmen, Inc. (R.B. Metalmen), has agreed to pay over $46,000 in restitution for unintentionally failing to pay the prevailing wage to seven employees, and nearly $1,600 in restitution for unintentionally failing to pay overtime. Bennett and his company must also pay $10,500 in fines for the violations. In addition, the company will pay $5,000 in fines for unintentionally failing to submit true and accurate certified payroll records to the awarding authorities at five public works job sites. Both Bennett and R.B. Metalmen, Inc. have agreed to a one-year debarment which will prohibit them from bidding on public works projects for a year.

An audit of the records determined that Bennett and R.B. Metalmen failed to pay the prevailing wage rate to several of their employees at a number of their public works sites including the Rumney Marsh Academy in Revere. Further, the audit revealed that the company had failed to pay time and a half to two employees for hours worked over forty in a single workweek.

Tuesday Afternoon

I received this pic this morning from Marylou, oops...sorry, I mean Maria. I've seen it before and it always reminds me of Face from Nickelodeon and not a Smile from God as it was labeled. Remember Face? "Hello there, Face here". Face would come on in between shows and my kids loved him. They loved him better than the programs they watched.

You may already know that Game 5 of the World Series was suspended due to rain. The score was tied 2-2. It's due to resume tonight or tomorrow night or "when weather conditions are decent".

Woke up this morning with a song in my head...Tuesday Afternoon by the Moody Blues, I think. Same verse...
Tuesday afternoon, I'm just beginning to see, now I'm on my way,
It doesn't matter to me, chasing the clouds away.
I haven't heard this song for a while, so I can't figure out why I'm thinking about it, other than it's Tuesday. And now the tune is in your head!

Cracked open the book I've been carrying around for months last night, Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks. He also wrote Message in a Bottle and my sweetie, Kevin Costner, starred in that movie, and The Notebook. Both were really good movies. Hopefully I'll finish it so I can go see the movie this weekend. Wikipedia describes the author as writing "novels with themes that include Christianity, love, tragedy and fate". All I know is I cried thru both and expect I'll do the same with this one. Nights in Rodanthe stars Richard Gere and Diane Lane. I'm about half-way thru the book and it's really good so far.

Now it's time to head to work.

The Contract

Finally watched this movie last night with Steven. I've had it for about 2 months from Netflix, or ever since Lynda took my TV to school.

The storyline: A widower, coach, and former policeman, Ray Keene, who lost his wife to cancer 2 years prior, takes his teenage son, Chris Keene, on a camping trip to try to bond with him after he is caught by the police smoking pot. Meanwhile, a mercenary assassin, Frank Carden, is arrested by the FBI after he is involved in a car accident. While Frank is being escorted by three FBI agents, his men try to rescue him, but his car falls into a river and is carried by the drift where Ray & Chris find them. Ray & Chris help the wounded agent and the cuffed Frank leave the river, and after the agent dies, Ray feels responsible to deliver Frank to justice. Frank trys to convince them to leave him there and walk away because his team is looking for him and will get rid of all witnesses. But Ray refuses to listen. Frank's men track them through the woods because Carden is the only one who has the information to the off-shore accounts for their money. While an undercover agent in the team is chasing the group with different lethal intentions.

John Cusack plays Ray Keene, Morgan Freeman plays Frank Carden, and Jamie Anderson plays Chris Keene.

Pretty good movie, different storyline, but with all the guns being shot and people being killed, the only one who shows any real emotion is the actor Jamie Anderson. I looked him up and surprisingly, this is the only thing I could find that he acted in. The strangest concept of this whole film was the only reason Cusack ended up having to bring Freeman in was his son's cellphone didn't work in the forest. However, the merceneries had no problem with their cellphones and one even had his laptop working while hiding in the trees. I wouldn't run out to rent it, wait for it to come to cable.

Sex & the City: The Movie

I watched this movie with Kasey & Lisa late Saturday night. Whether you watched the series or not, they explained enough about each of the characters so that you could follow the movie.

I thought it was a pretty good movie and stayed true to the series. Never knew what "Big's" real name was until now. John James Preston, and I still don't get why Carrie picked him over Aidan (don't know unless you watched the series)...but I never thought Carrie was a beauty either, nor Miranda. The only 2 I ever thought were cast correctly for a title like this were Charlotte & Samantha.

Stars Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones, Kristin Davis as Charlotte York, and Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes.

Nice chick flick, glad I didn't see it at the movies but it would have been fun to dress up and see it.

Word from our soldier girl is she arrived in Kuwait Friday morning and reports, "it's hot, sandy and it sucks". Already, Jess?

Well the good news is that it's raining in Watertown, NY, today with a high of 44 degrees. Highs for Tuesday & Wednesday are in the upper 30's with a chance of snow showers both days. I don't want to be in Kuwait, but I'll take hot and sandy over cold and snow.

Monday morning thoughts...

Why do we start our diets on a Monday?
As if Monday isn't bad enough on it's own.

As you may have figured out, I am starting mine, again, today. So far, so good...and it's only been 3 hours. I'm going back on the low-carb diet I went on at the beginning of the year. Did really well, but didn't lose all that I wanted to and then partied for the summer, but didn't gain back all that I lost either...so I'm still ahead of the game. Before the big food holidays begin, I'm starting again. Besides, I want a smaller bathing suit for Aruba in February. Not that I want the one I have to be smaller, I want a smaller size than I have now.

Maybe I'll reach my goal this time...if not, there's always next Monday.

It's the week of Hecate's moon -- the new moon in Scorpio that is closest to Halloween. This bewitching luminary asks us to honor the spirits, and it's up to us to decide just how. Some will dawn a macabre mask, while others will be playful and sexy. Scorpio may be the sign of death and transformation, but that doesn't mean we have to be heavy about it. Sometimes the thing that needs to die is an overly serious attitude. (Click here to see your Zodiac Sign)

Recall - Sherwood Brands Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate Coins

This story has made it to my email a few times. It doesn't say that the Pirate's Gold Coins are sold out of Costco in the US, but because this is a big candy holiday, I figured I'd post it just in case.

On October 8, 2008, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume, distribute, or sell the Sherwood Brands Pirate’s Gold Milk Chocolate Coins described below. This product is being recalled due to positive test results for melamine conducted by the CFIA.

The affected product, Sherwood Brands Pirate’s Gold Milk Chocolate Coins, is sold in 840g containers containing 240 pieces per container bearing UPC 0 36077 11240 7 and lot code 1928S1.

This product is sold nationally through Costco stores and may also have been sold in bulk packages or as individual pieces at various dollar and bulk stores across Canada.

If the original product identity and UPC code is not evident, consumers are advised to check with their retailer to determine if they have the affected product.

Retailers and distributors are advised to stop distributing Sherwood Brands Pirate’s Gold Milk Chocolate Coins and to initiate a voluntary recall of this product. The CFIA will be working with the importers to remove the affected product from the marketplace.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Although the health risk associated with these products is considered to be low, the advisory is being issued as a result of the Government of Canada’s ongoing investigation into milk and milk-derived products sourced in/from China that may have been distributed in Canada. Breeder's Cup Classic

I'm patiently waiting for the race to begin. My husband's favorite horse is Curlin. Mine is Tiago, which is Portuguese for James (my dad's and grand dad's name). My 2nd pick would be Colonel John. I believe all 3 were in the Kentucky Derby. Haven't got a clue what the odds are on any of them. I've read that Curlin' was the morning favorite for a lot of obvious reasons; won the 2007 Breeder's Cup Classic, named Horse of the Year. Even so, none of it means much to me. I prefer to go with my gut.

I'm watching the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf race and for this one I'd pick Paddy the Pro ridden by Garrett Gomez. The announcer just said this jockey has 3 Breeder's Cup wins already. They're talking a lot about a horse named Donativum. It's a gray horse, and I have a thing about not betting gray horses. The horse is owned by a sheik's wife. And of course...Donativum was the winner. Paddy the Pro didn't even show.

Maybe I ought to rethink my strategy.

UPDATE: 1-Raven's Pass, 2-HenryTheNavigator, 3-Tiago, 4-Curlin

Raven's Pass is owned by the sheik's wife who also owns Donativum.

The jockey, Garrett Gomez, wins the Shoemaker Award for 4 wins in 2 days of racing. But no, he couldn't win the race I picked him in.

Water Main Breaks

I'm wondering if we'll have water because of this, or will they just be able to find the break faster. You can't imagine how often this happens. Would the investment be better spent if they just replaced the pipes to begin with?

REVERE - A recent water main break in the Beachmont area was fixed in record time thanks to the combination of 20th-century metal detector technology and $480,000 worth of 21st-century Geographic Information System mapping innovation. (Boston Globe-Full Story)

Wonderland Dog Track

Seems the track may go down without a vote on Ballot Question 3.

The City of Revere filed a motion in Suffolk Superior Court yesterday to seize assets from Wonderland Greyhound Park after officials alleged the racetrack owners failed to make a $250,000 payment in back taxes. (Boston Globe-Full Story)

Reason for concern?

Oct. 24 (Bloomberg) -- The following companies are having unusual price changes in U.S. trading. Stock symbols are in parentheses, and share prices are as of 1:10 p.m. in New York, unless otherwise specified. (Full Story)

The one I'm interested in:
Avis Budget Group Inc. (CAR US) dropped 19 percent to $1.09 and earlier slipped to $1.04, the lowest intraday price since at least September 1983. The third-largest U.S. car-rental firm had its debt rating cut by the Standard & Poor's.

And can someone tell me when we became "The third-largest U.S. car-rental firm"?

Tonight's events...

well, after a wonderful evening of chicken fried rice, moo goo gai pan, yu hsiang beef, chicken & shrimp, pu pu platter, soda's for the kids and designated driver... and the best mai tai's in the whole wide world for mom or nana, depending on who you are (I'm talking here right now, not you) ...we are now anxiously awaiting the start of Friday Night Wrestling. It's still early, so anything could happen.

Only wish I could have gone out with my BFF to dinner and then to see Saw V with her and her son. Although, I haven't seen Saw IV...seriously, will it make a difference? I was afraid it would ruin the whole plot.

I remember when Friday nights didn't start until 11:00 PM.
I don't think ours will last that long. But there is hope.

As far as my opinion with the restaurant, it differs with my brother-in-law, Joe. That shouldn't surprise anyone, there isn't much we agree on. His best night is tomorrow night at his favorite chinese food place on Route 1 North, with the pre-mixed, watered down mai tai's...but what do I know.

Me ka aloha (google it).
