Police fear gun thefts prelude to more crime

The Southern Maine Violent Crimes Task Force and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office are investigating a rash of house burglaries in which dozens of guns were stolen.

The theft of guns is particularly worrisome, says Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion, because black-market firearms invariably end up contributing to more violent crimes.

"Somebody today is sitting on a hoard of guns, and that creates a real bad situation for everybody," Dion said. "If we don't do something to recover those guns, something will happen and it will be a tragedy."

The sheriff's office is investigating 19 residential burglaries that have occurred primarily in North Yarmouth, Naples, Sebago and Harpswell. It is unclear whether some of those burglaries are connected.
